At the beginning of December, there is a sense of expectation in the air. Children anxiously await Santa Claus while adults anxiously await their visiting in-laws, we all look forward to the the start of the new year and many of us anticipate the birth of Jesus Christ. December is universally a month of preparation.
In this fast-paced month, it’s easy to focus on preparing just the physical aspects of the upcoming holidays. We think more about the gifts to be bought, the food to be prepared and the travel arrangements to be made instead of about the people who will go without this season — the lonely, the homeless, the hungry, the sick and the migrants.
In a season where we routinely sing about “good will toward men”, we tend to get wrapped up in ourselves and our own issues. Instead of turning inward, this December let us go outside of ourselves in three ways.
First, in a season of plenty, let us not forget to share our good fortunes with others. There are so many people who are hungry and cold, so many mothers and fathers struggling to make Christmas special for their kids. Consider donating toys or food to make the holidays bright for everyone.
This time of year, there are always more opportunities to be involved in your community. Get involved with the work of our Community Partners who often need specific help during the holidays.
Spend everyday more intentionally — make this a season where everyday is infused with a little more patience, a little more kindness. Go out of your way to do small things, whether holding the door for a stranger or greeting folks on your way to work. It’s up to all of us to shift the season to one of kindness and love.
